PART A Understanding Workplace Stress Work-related stress is a growing problem around the world that affects not only the health and well-being of employees, but also the productivity of organizations. Work-related stress arises where work demands of various types and combinations exceed the person’s capacity and capability to cope. Work-related stress is the second most common compensated illness after musculoskeletal disorders. Emotions are physiological, behavioral, and psychological episodes experienced toward an object, person, or event that create a state of readiness. These episodes are very brief events that typically subside or occur in waves lasting from milliseconds to a few minutes. Emotions are directed toward someone or something. In cognitive process, we include logical reasoning before we behave some ways. This process is conquered by attitudes. Attitudes are the cluster of beliefs, assessed feelings, and behavioral intentions toward a person, object, or event. Attitudes are judgments, whereas emotions are experiences. These emotions are transmitted to the logical reasoning process, where they swirl around and influence our logical thinking about the attitude. Thus, while consciously evaluating whether the merger is good or bad, emotions have already formed an opinion, which then sways conscious evaluation. In fact, we often deliberately â€Å"listen in† on our emotions to help us consc iously decide whether to support or oppose something.
